Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode run on its core Search ranking and quality systems, with no special markup or files required. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search, then it competes on the usual basis: helpful, original, well-organized content from a credible source. Other assistants cite differently, so keep facts clear, current and consistent across the web.
What Google actually says
Google published its guide for site owners on generative AI features in Search on 15 May 2026. Its AI optimization guide and the AI features and your website page say that AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, that no extra requirements or special optimization apply, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search to be shown. Structured data is not required for these features. In short, optimizing for Google’s AI features is SEO, not a separate discipline.
Cover the topic, not one keyword
Google’s AI features can split one question into several related searches, a technique called query fan-out. That favors sites that cover a subject in depth, with pages that link to each other, over one thin page aimed at a single phrase.
What helps
- Pages that can be crawled and indexed
- Clear, direct answers at the top of each page
- Original material from a named, credible author
- Consistent facts about your brand across your site and profiles
Other assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude use their own search and weigh sources differently, but clear, specific, up-to-date pages tend to be easier for all of them to quote. Check that your robots.txt does not block their search crawlers by accident.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Google does not require one for its AI features. Some other tools may read it, and it is cheap to add, so this site has one. Treat it as housekeeping, not a ranking lever.
How long does it take to show up?
There is no fixed timeline. A new site has to be crawled and indexed first, then earn visibility over weeks and months. Anyone promising guaranteed AI citations is guessing.
